Why Field?
Thank you for your interest in The Field School!  We are honored to have families look at our school, and we hope that this website answers most of your questions about our school and the admissions process.

Your first question, we suspect is: Why Field?  What makes our school different or special?  Why is this the best place for your child?

Uniquely small class sizes, with a median of 11 students
.
Most comparable independent schools have 14 to 15 children in the classroom.

Student-teacher ratio of six to one
.
Similar schools have a ratio around 9 to 1. Field students receive an unmatched level of attention and personal instruction.

An ethos that promotes and even demands that students are engaged.
Ask any of the students here.  We demand and receive academic excellence.

Learning how to learn.
Field's first mission is to teach the crucial skills: critical thinking, inquiry, writing, and problem solving.  We do not follow “tracks” similar to other schools to separate students based on levels of academic achievement. Students receive daily exposure to varying types of teaching, modeling that there is more than one way to think, to learn, to process information, to express an idea.
The right blend for results.
Our school makes kids interested in learning through a blend of focus on academic excellence and individual expression. Our accepting environment sets the stage.  Exposure to intellectual and personal diversity adds to the mix.  Each student achieves individual success in his or her own way -- a strong message of acceptance and individuality that may be the richest lesson of all.

Field has heart – and soul.
As a part of our admissions process, we look for an intellectual or artistic spark in our applicants.  Something about the school – whether it’s the interesting buildings, the intimate atmosphere, the wide-ranging arts program, or maybe just our cool science labs – reaches the students, and we see them light up. That spark means that they are right for Field.

100% college acceptance – but it’s not all about AP classes and SAT scores.
Each year we have alumni attending a mix of small liberal arts colleges, larger state universities, art schools and Ivy League colleges.  While at Field, all students participate in mandatory studio arts and athletics programs, and a two-week winter internship brings our students regularly into the community.

Why Field?  The bottom line is this:  Field creates excellent college students, but it creates something even greater along the way – extraordinary adults.
