 | The Middle School Experience
Middle school years are periods of tremendous growth for students, and Field’s goal is to help our seventh and eighth graders become more independent and responsible while always providing a close and supportive guiding hand – the right blend of individuality and connectedness. Field does this by keeping the middle school small (about 30 students per grade level), providing a distinct advising program, and providing these younger students with an experience that is somewhat separate from the upper school with some crossover.
Separate but Together
Field provides middle school students with experiences that are distinctly their own in academic, athletic, studio and social arenas while also allowing students areas of contact with older students and the school as a whole. For example, while middle schoolers play on their own teams in the fall and winter sports seasons, they may play with older students in the spring if it is appropriate. Similarly, while many activities are tailored for middle schoolers, our jazz ensemble might well feature an 8th grade drummer playing behind an 11th grade singer. In addition, each middle school student has an 11th or 12th grade mentor that they meet with regularly throughout the year.
Middle School Advisory Time
These experiences are balanced with regular, structured sessions of “middle schoolers only.” Each middle school student meets regularly one-on-one with his or her adviser, and several times every week students gather in small groups with the adviser to discuss issues or just connect. Students benefit from this blend of age-specific programs and classes, all within the larger context of purposeful contact with the rest of the Field community. The experience helps students learn with their role models, become part of the school and grow.
Seasoned Leadership
The head of middle school, Susan Greenspan, is an not only an experienced Field School teacher but she is also an experienced grade head, having led our tenth grade for the last several years. She is assisted by teacher Julia Lacy. You can reach Susan at SusanG@fieldschool.org.
