Let's just say, the jet lag was worth it! The West coast alumni events in San Francisco and Los Angeles brought together over 30 alumni- from the early eighties up through the class of 2006. Former faculty member, Mike Peterson and his wife Lois earned the award for "the longest distance traveled within California." They traveled all the way from San Diego to Los Angeles! And we are so glad they did. We were also delighted that two alumni dads happened to be visiting from the East coast and were able join us in Hollywood. The Alumni crowd was thrilled to see some of their favorite Field teachers, connect with other Field folks in their cities and relish in the Field friendships that have endured long past graduation.

Designers, editors, clowns, oh my! From the undeclared undergrads with every path still at their feet, to those who have traveled a long road to practice medicine, and all those going back to school to become masters of their craft, the Field grads residing in NYC are doing very cool things. The current Field crew trained up on Friday, January 22nd and found our way to the lower east side, in the hopes of spending some quality time with Field alums- mission accomplished! It was a true delight to catch up with each of the twenty eight alumni (80s through the class of 2008) and former faculty member, Scott Rostan- We are always blown away by the eclectic variety of projects and career paths Field grads pursue.

On the Saturday after Thanksgiving, Field again opened its gym doors to alumni and members of this year’s Varsity basketball team for the 3rd Annual Alumni/Varsity Basketball Game.  Twelve alumni and four current Varsity players joined together to represent a span of twelve years of Field graduating classes (three members from the Class of ’01 attended for the first time, while one member of the Class of ’12 made his first appearance in this tradition too).  It was great having new faces this year, as well as having six players make their 3rd straight appearance.  We look forward to a rematch next year:  same place, same time.

This year’s roster of participants included:  Brendan Bailes ('01), Patrick Rees (’01), JD Sand (’01), Tim Caflisch (’04), Ethan Dyer ('05), Alex Litoff ('06), Danny Wolk (’06), Colin Hanrahan ('08), Richard Jackson ('08), Wolf Boltansky (’09), Brandon Gatling ('09), Alex Roppolo ('09), Niko De Leon ('10), Tucker Kelleher-Brozost ('11), Dylan McGuire (’11), and Matt Witkin (’12).

CLASS OF '84 - 25 YEAR REUNION

Members of Field's 1984 graduating class organized a twenty five year reunion weekend this fall. Wasting no time, this fun-loving bunch kicked off the weekend with a happy hour on Friday night, November 13th. A small (but highly enthusiastic) group met up at the foxhall campus on Saturday afternoon to check out Field's new diggs and visit with Field teachers, Will Layman and Natalia Kormeluk. While touring the campus, the '84 graduates channeled their teenage spirits and reminisced about the old days, giving their spouses and children a chance to see what their high school days were like. The group later rejoined their fellow fieldmates at the home of Jeremy and Dena Sher for a reunion dinner. Eleven alumni were in attendance. The group totaled seventeen including spouses, dates and children. It was a gathering to remember.

The class of 1994 reunited on September 12th, 2009, just fifteen years and a few months after they each received their diplomas and spoke in turn at graduation (a tradition that carries on at The Field School). Wan Ryu, a current Field teacher and alum from the class of '93, led the group of eight alumni, their spouses and children on a tour of the Foxhall campus. After the tour and reception, the group gathered at Mike Bowers '94 house for an extended time of reminiscing and having a good time.

On August 22nd, twenty seven members of the class of 1989 (plus a couple of former faculty members, some spouses and a few kids) came home to Field to celebrate their 20 year reunion. The campus was unfamiliar to many, but the memories and the spirit of Field live on with vibrant energy. It was a lively group, and while there was plenty of catching up to do, it turns out many in the group keep in close contact. There was even talk of frequent play dates for the little ones.

Chris Lorrain led a tour throughout the Foxhall campus, sharing anecdotes along the way from days past and a few from the new generation of Field students. Chris assured the alumni that the students of today are the same bright, creative, funky, free-thinking spirits that have always made Field "Field.

SENIOR LUNCH 2009

On May 21st, with graduation looming on the horizon, 61 members of the Senior class were welcomed into the greater Field Alumni community. This intimate induction-ceremony-of-sorts, held in the Cafritz living room, was a time for students and teachers to share memories, celebrate one another, and begin the bittersweet farewell ritual. Head of School, Dale Johnson opened the time with a few meaningful words and opened the floor to teachers and students. The love and appreciation was palpable in the room as the students reflected on their time at Field. Whether it was a six year survivor, or a student who transferred to Field in the 12th grade, there was a common acknowledgment among the group that Field has nurtured and challenged them to be their truest selves; that they have found life-long friends in their classmates and teachers; and their lives have been invaluably and indelibly shaped by Field.

Field graduates Bronwen Rankin '93 and Anne Foley '96 shared about their involvement with Field as alumnae- respectively as a board member and a current Field teacher. 12th grade heads, John Cichello and Kate Samuel gave one last coaches speech, in preparation for graduation. And to conclude the time, English department head, Gil Gallagher presented a poem he wrote for the class of 2009. The seniors received a copy of the poem and a small gift from the Alumni Office- a blue multi-tool, imprinted with the Field logo, as a reminder and encouragement that they have the tools they need to go forth and change the world.

A Tool - by Gil Gallagher

We’ve made so many things for you along the way.

Perhaps from time to time you’ve seen behind

the workshop’s curtain, peered in as we bent

to our work honing, sharpening edges, points, blades.

It’s hard work, but we get to see the sparks fly up

from the wheel; we get to see how, with the right tools

in hand, young hands can lift such heavy loads, can

build such unifying structures: chairs for pondering on,

lamps to light up late night conversation, mirrors in which

to catch a silvered glimpse of what you are becoming--

you, the real end towards which our labor moves.

We hope we’ve made enough for you, filled your

pockets with useful things such that you can whittle

shapes out of the world, such that when you find

the unexpected chasm in your way, you can build

a bridge across it, lift your burdens, walk on down the road.

4th ANNUAL SENIOR/ALUMNI LUNCHEON

For the last several years many of our young Alumni have come back to Field over the winter break to participate in the Alumni Luncheon and discussion, moderated by Chris Lorrain. This year's lunch, held on Friday January 9th, was a great opportunity for the Senior class to hear about a range of transitions they might experience in a few short months: colder climates, new cultures, larger class sizes, living with their friends, increased work load, and more. The Seniors were curious to hear about every aspect of the social and academic life of a college student. The wisdom ranged from practical advice on how to get along with your roommate and how to develop good study habits, to the more cautious reminder that not every person will be as friendly and accepting as their Field friends. The chorus from the alumni was that Field had prepared them to think critically and write well, to engage their professors beyond the classroom, and to form friendships with all kinds of people, without superficial judgments. The 18 alumni in attendance ranged from the class of '82 to the class of '08:

Judy Vogt James (’82), Zach Cregger (’98), Nigel Parkinson (’99), Daniel Legum (’04), Zach Aronow (’05), Ethan Dyer (’05), Brandon Mizroch (’06), Jessie Walton (’06), Kitty McClintic (’06), Alexandra Stein (’07), Hannah Kroll (’07), Aliyah Mousavi (’08), Richard Jackson (’08), Caitlin Munro (’08), Nora Allen (’08), Murphy Miller (’08), Sally Atwater (’08), Julie Meade (’08)

2nd ANNUAL STUDENT/ALUMNI OF COLOR LUNCHEON

The Alumni of Color Luncheon, co-hosted by A.W.A.R.E. and the Alumni Office on Wednesday, January 7th was a true success, in the most Field kind of way. The students and teachers of A.W.A.R.E. (which stands for Always Wanting Acknowledgment Respect and Equality) strive to promote diversity and cultural awareness at Field.  Since its founding in 2004, A.W.A.R.E. has grown from an initial membership of five students to over 30 members whose range of diversity includes different racial, ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, as well as ages and sexual orientations.

This lunch was started in an effort to bring together alumni of color and current students representing the diversity at Field. The open, honest dialogue, moderated by A.W.A.R.E.'s faculty sponsor Gerald Eugene, offered students and Alumni the chance to be heard and to encourage and challenge one another. The students shared their experiences from the Student Diversity Leadership Conference in New Orleans.  Many students expressed gratitude for the accepting and supportive environment at Field, which they learned was not the case for many students in other parts of the country. The alumni spoke of their exciting new endeavors on college campuses far and wide, including continued efforts to celebrate diversity. They shared the joys and challenges of larger campuses with even more diversity. Many other stories of adversity and achievement were discussed, with an overall message of hope for an even more aware and diverse Field community.

The six alumni in attendance were: Nigel Parkinson (’99), Alex Paige (’06), Monique Cherry (’07), Gabi Green-Oakes (’08), Sheika Nicole Reid (’08), and Richard Jackson (’08).

WINTER OPEN HOUSE 2008

Students, parents, faculty and over 30 alumni gathered on Tuesday, December 16th for Field’s annual winter celebration of the arts at the 2008 Winter Open House.  The campus literally twinkled and sparkled with lights, ribbons, wreathing, trim, and loving care.  The main attraction – as always – was our students' hard work in their studio classes.  Music!  Painting!  Drama!  Pottery!  Newspaper!  Photography!  CREATIVITY!  Beyond all that, there was the sense of community all around us.

Continuing a recent tradition, two alums also displayed their creative artwork alongside the students’ work.  Evan Keeling (’95), showcased his portfolio of independent comics, graphic novels and illustrations. Making her second appearance at Winter Open House, Judy Vogt James (’82) displayed and sold her jewelry, ornaments, and decorative glass art.  Highlighting the rich talents of Field’s alumni is an important and fun aspect of our community, because it shows our students that there are opportunities to pursue one’s interests in the arts as a career or hobby.  Thank you to Judy and Evan for coming back to Field and being so generous with their time and their talent!

2nd ANNUAL ALUMNI/VARSITY BASKETBALL GAME

For the second consecutive year, alumni returned to Field on the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend to hit the hardcourt with members of the Varsity basketball team.  The teams were comprised of both current students and alumni.  Many of the alums were making their second appearance, and all were pleased to once again have Head Coach Matt FitzSimmons organizing the game.  As this game becomes an established annual tradition, we’re hoping that the '09 seniors will come back and play as alumni next year.

This year’s roster of participants included: David Marimon ('02), Ethan Dyer ('05), Alex Litoff ('06), Jared Coleman ('06), Michael Chickinell ('07), Mike Nemeyer ('07), Thomas Barnes ('07), Tyler Abell ('07), Colin Hanrahan ('08), Erik Grimm ('08), Alex Roppolo ('09), Brandon Gatling ('09), Niko De Leon ('10), and Tucker Brozost-Kelleher ('11).

CLASS OF '97's 11th YEAR REUNION

On Friday, November 28th, several members from the Class of ’97 came back to Field to kick-off Thanksgiving weekend with their 11th Year Reunion.  Carrie Baroody Johnson – with her two sons in tow – led the group of alums on a full tour of the Foxhall campus, which included a guest appearance by Officer Bill.  The tour attendees included: Sarah Small, Rachel Small (’03), Liz Luisada, Jonathan Ruhe and his fiancee, and Caroline Haarmann

HOMECOMING... FIELD STYLE

Saturday, October 17th was a glorious Fall day – the kind homecomings are made of.  The weather was perfect, the BBQ was even better, the volleyball and soccer games were entertaining, and the faculty band Ready, Set, Go was in great form.

It was truly a "coming home" experience for many who attended.  Former faculty returned to enjoy the day with their friends and past students.  Alumni from the olden-golden days and recent graduates alike came to see some familiar faces and to soak in the sense of community that Field offers.  Many were lured by the man, the myth, the legend, Chris Lorrain, who made a guest appearance alongside Ready, Set, Go band mates Will Layman, Gil Gallagher, Tim Lyons and Jeff Kurtz.

ALUMNI REUNITE IN WASHINGTON, DC

Over 25 DC area alumni — as well as one alum in town from California — met for a Field gathering at Nanny O'Briens in Cleveland Park on Wednesday, April 16th. Alumni from the Class of 1978 all the way to the Class of 2004 came together to catch up and reminisce about their days as Field students. In addition to current faculty members that included Natalia Kormeluk, Chris Lorrain, Dale & Carrie Johnson, Tara Hanlon & Gil Gallagher, the group also featured a former faculty member, Lisa Glen Pence.

Among the highlights from the evening were stories from Lyndon Abell ('78) and Ned Sherburne ('78) about life at Field before the school was located on Wyoming Avenue (this bit of school history came as news to several alums). Current Field teacher and alum, Wan Ryu (’93), also enjoyed his two worlds coming together as he caught up with old friends and classmates, as well as several of his former students. And Jay Hills brought along his 21-month old son as a representative of the future Field Class of 2024!

To see a full list of all those who attended, click here. This DC event was the third in a series of recent alumni events across the country, which included gatherings in San Francisco and New York City.

The next alumni gathering is scheduled on Field’s campus following Studio Day on Saturday, May 10th.

On February 27th amidst the bright lights of Times Square in the “city that never sleeps,” a small group of Field staff - Dale and Carrie Johnson, Natalia Kormeluk, Karen Keating, Will Layman, Chris Lorrain, David Buffum, Quincey Grieve and James Woodward - welcomed a large contingent of Field alums from the New York City area for a two-hour-plus reunion event at the Heartland Brewery on 43rd Street.

The event, planned to coincide with The Field School's participation in the National Association of Independent Schools annual convention in the Big Apple, saw Field alums as far back as the class of 1975 [Sarah Olsen Ritchie] and as recent as the class of 2007 [Janice Gilman] showing up for several hours of reminiscences, excellent food, thirst-quenching beverages, and many laughs. Thirty-two alums - one from the ‘70s, seven from the ‘80s, nine from the ‘90s, and fifteen from the ‘00s – came and participated in the festivities. In addition to the loyal contingent of former students, a small group of former faculty stopped by as well, including Scott Rostan, Camila Sosman, and Will Weir.

The event gave all those present a wonderful opportunity to connect with classmates, with former teachers, and with the community that defines Field across the years, regardless of whether or not “shared time” defined the connection between everyone. Coming on the heels of a very successful San Francisco alumni event, the Field community is certainly energized by the passion and unwavering loyalty and appreciation that former “Fieldies” - be they students or teachers - continue to feel months, years or decades after leaving the Field campus.

ALUMNI REUNITE IN SAN FRANCISCO

Saturday night may be the loneliest night of the week for Frank Sinatra, but on February 9th, it was the most gregarious of nights as teachers Chris Lorrain and Natalia Kormeluk and Head of School Dale Johnson reunited with some of those “old” students at the Gordon Biersch Brewery in downtown San Francisco.  Some went back as far as 1979 [Kathleen Bauer Romero], and some were as recent as 1999 [Stacey Wirt and Chris Kramer], with Amy Herrema Chevrolet (Class of 1987) and Tony D’Alessio (Class of 1994) representing classes in between those years.

What was obvious from the arrival of the first treasured alum [Katharine “Katie Owen” Mason – Class of 1987] to the last to show [Stacey and Chris] was the strong bonds that linked each of them to their time at Field and to each other as students who had experienced learning “the Field way.”  Whether they spent six years at Field [Katharine Mason] or just two [Jean-Pierre Weingarten – Class of 1981], the affection and appreciation for Field’s role in their own personal development was palpable in what each shared about then and about now.

Seated around a large table, three Field staffers, seven alumni and five spouses, siblings or significant others who accompanied them regaled everyone with reminiscences from their time at Field and anecdotes about their current lives.  With humor, vividness, enthusiasm and warmth, each person connected her or his story to the larger narrative that was and is our shared Field experience.  That the “non-Fieldies” present got involved in the dialogue speaks to the tremendous atmosphere which came about during those three-hours-plus of reunion time.

When the group parted ways, everyone had renewed friendships and made new ones.  Who could ask for anything more?

The alumni who attended the event were:

On Saturday, November 24th, we held our first alumni / varsity basketball game.  The event was well attended as eighteen past and present players squared off for what hopefully will become an annual event.  There was a representative from every class from '02 through '10, and the teams put on an exciting show for the approximately 25 faithful family members and friends who came out to watch.  The white team ultimately prevailed 48-47, and neither team ever led by more than five points.

It was great to see so many familiar faces, both parents and players.  Thanks to all who came and were a part of it.  Hopefully we'll see you next year.
