The Class of 2010 Looks Back, Moves Forward
6/14/2010

Graduation is rite of passage for any high school senior, but at Field it is a highly personal experience and a celebration of a school career truly different than most.

Sixty-three proud seniors graduated from Field on Friday, June 11, 2010, each one being offered a moment at the podium to address the hundreds in attendance.  The graduates thanked teachers, family and friends, but they also told stories about their high school years and spoke from the heart about what it meant to attend a school where creativity, caring and indivuality is prized as much as grades or memorizing facts.

The commencement speaker was master teacher Chris Lorrain, who started teaching at Field in 1980 and has taught a full generation of Field students.  Chris told the story of trying out for his college football team, only to find that his destiny was not in tackling but in managing several teams, including one that won a NCAA championship.  The lively address received a standing ovation.

In addition to the speeches, the graduation featured musical performances by the A Cappella class, by the Field School Jazz Ensemble, and the traditional rendering of Bob Dylan's anthem "Forever Young" by six graduating soloists at the ceremony's end.  A moment later, the gym exploded with New Orleans parade rhythms and the graduates and their teachers strutted out to the groove of "When the Saints Go Marching In."

With that, the 2009-2010 school year at Field ended, joyously.

LOST in Philosophy
5/22/2010

The Field School has always had a knack for making "serious" learning fun.  It's no news to our alumni, parents, students and teachers that Field gets students to engage with history and literature through debate and creativity, engages students with science and math using games and food, or teaches the grandest philosophical ideas using, well . . . television and rock 'n' roll.

Today, however, this last detail is news in the Washington Post.  The Saturday May 22, 2010 Post Style section features Field on its front page.  (Read the article RIGHT HERE.)

History Department Chair Emily Kleinman and math teacher Kabe Erkenbrack have been teaching a once-a-week honors seminar called "Lost in Philosophy" for the past two years.  Field students not only watch Lost, the dense and allusive television serial about a group that crashes on a mysterious island, but they also read and discuss the writings (by the likes of Locke, Rousseau, and so on) that are named-checked or implicated by the show.  Lost concludes its six-season run on ABC tomorrow.

It's a Gold Medal for the First Annual Field Field Day
5/14/2010

Everyone was a champion at this uniquely Field event.

The first annual Field Field Day took off Friday with a flurry of activities and funtivities. The event, organized by Field Faculty, was by all reports a gold medal winner. The entire student body was divided into blue and white teams to compete in a range of athletic and mind-challenging activities. There was the high flying Frisbee toss, the not-so-square Four Square, the spellingh bee, a summer trivia contest, a melody of traditonal relays, and more.

Who had more fun at this event, teachers or students?  Undecided. The results of the day however are clear: an annual Field Day at Field is a winning tradition.

Studio potter Hayne Bayless shared his unique clay techniques to a rapt audience of Field ceramic students this week. Haynes is an established and highly regarded artist from Ivoryton, Connecticut. He showed students his current work–a hand built aesthetic and functional pieces that emphasize the interaction between form and surface. What was Bayless’ most important piece of wisdom?  "The trick," he said, "is not to fool with clay’s desire to be expressive."

A Whopping 22 Alumni Back On Campus This Week
1/8/2010

Upon graduation from Field our adventurous alumni scatter to all corners of the nation—and the globe. Thankfully the tearful departures on graduation day are not once-and-for-all goodbyes. Alumni still come back to visit their teachers and friends every once in a while. For the past couple of years, we have taken advantage of the college winter break schedules by inviting our alumni back for two lunches during the first week of school in January: The Alumni/AWARE Diversity Lunch and the "Life After Field" Senior/Alumni Lunch.

Midweek Field Trips Brings Treasures of the City and Service to the City to Our Students
10/16/2009

Excursions, among other places, to
The National Cathedral, The National Gallery, Marvin Gaye Park, the Japanese American Memorial, and the Newseum, made learning an active venture this week.

In an unusual week of school, nearly all of our students got in some useful experiential learning.  The seventh grades performed valuable community service in the city, the eighth grade experiences critical artifacts from history, and the tenth grade saw before them the art that had previously only been referenced in a classroom.

Hall of Fame Soccer Champion Gives Students
Tips on Leadership and Soccer

Julie Foudy won Olympic gold with the US Women's National Soccer Team in 1996 and 2004 (not to mention silver or, as she called it, "white gold", in 2000), and her National Team career included 45 goals, 59 assists and 271 international appearances.  Zow!

At an all-school assembly on Thursday, October 1st, the former captain of the national team shared her secrets for leadership, staying away from drinking, and scoring winning goals. After the assembly,  students were in awe as Foudy demonstrated some soccer skills on the field. As one student said, Foudy demonstrated her leadership skills by giving us "constructive criticism and lots of support."
