 | The Arts Do Not Take a Back Seat An integral
part of Field’s curriculum,
the studio arts provide the playing field for the imagination. Students
in grades 7 through 12 explore
different forms of self-expression. Studio classes, required for every
student in the school, meet daily; one-on-one teacher-student interaction
is the primary mode of learning.
Evaluation Through Exhibition Students in the studio arts receive grades not only for their effort and attitude but also for the courage and results that come through in the public exhibition of their creations. Work is shared within the school community
and outside school through performances, exhibitions and publications.
Many Choices Among the range
of studio activities are two-dimensional visual arts, photography, performing
arts, music, journalism, yearbook, computer graphics, video, sculpture
and ceramics. Older students may choose to complete an Advanced Placement portfolio toward the end of heir course of study.
Hands-on Teachers All of our studio art teachers are practitioners in their field — potters, musicians, actors/directors, photographers, and the like. In the classroom, they teach by working with students who are doing rather than just listening. The emphasis is largely on process over product. Our arts students aim to understand and enjoy the artistic process rather than to focus only on the end result.
The Arts Aid Academic Achievement From the beginnings of our school, we have believed — and we have seen proof — that students who take time every day to express themselves artistically and to exercise a different part of their brain and heart are more successful students in math, history, English, science, and foreign languages. Our studio art program is a dear ally of the whole of our curriculum in our students' lives.
