Process
We'd love to meet you!

Thank you for your interest in The Field School.  We are honored to have families consider entrusting the education of their student to our school.

GETTING TO KNOW THE FIELD SCHOOL

We strongly recommend that, before applying, parents get to know The Field School. The best way is through a small group tour, but there are three methods:

Tour: Between October 1st and January 15th, we will run daily small group tours of the campus and classrooms in action beginning at 8:30 AM.  Including a question-and-answer session, this visit lasts about two hours.  These tours are designed with parents in mind, but more mature students are welcome.  Generally, these small tours are recommended.  You must contact us to make an appointment—call the Office of Admissions at 202-295-5839 to set up your visit or email us HERE.

Open House:  As an alternative to a tour, families may prefer to attend one of our open houses.
September 23, 2010 (Thursday, 2:00pm)
October 16, 2010 (Saturday, 9:30am)
November 18, 2010 (Thursday, 2:00pm)
December 4, 2010 (Saturday, 9:30am)
There is no need to sign-up for an Open House.  Come one, come all!

Call:  At any time, feel free to simply call our office to talk about Field and how it may fit your child.  We can be reached during business hours at 202 295-5839, or look to the right to see about speaking directly to Will or Maureen about a specific grade level.
THE APPLICATION PROCESS

If you have visited our school and concluded that Field may be the right choice for your family, then applying is a simple five-step process:  (1) completion of an application, (2) a student visit and conversation, (3) the student's completion (at home) of an essay given out during the visit, (4) provision of additional materials (testing, transcripts, recommendations, a parent questionnaire), and if relevant (5) the timely delivery of financial aid materials.

Step One: Submit an Application
Applications for students to be considered in the "first round" (decisions to be mailed on March 5th) are due January 15, 2011.  Families applying for financial aid are STRONGLY encouraged to apply by this deadline.  Families must apply online as applications received online can be processed more quickly and be accurately transfered directly into our system.  Applications processed through Infosnap are completely private and secure; the forms can be accessed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, wherever families have Internet access; Infosnap allows you to find out when required forms (such as teacher and parent recommendations, SSAT scores and transcripts) have been received by Field, and to pay the required $80 application fee using a major credit card.  Families without Internet access may call our admissions office for a complete application packet.
There is a one-time nonrefundable $80 application fee.

Step Two: Student Visits and Interviews
Upon receipt of the application and fee, a member of the admissions office will call you to invite your child to visit the school.  (Applications received by the 1/15 deadline are guaranteed a visit before our 3/5 decision date.  Later applicants will be able to visit in April or later, if room is still available in the school.)  During the visit, your child will attend classes with a current student as his/her personal guide. Following the visit, you and your child will meet for an interview with a member of our admissions team. During this interview, your child will be given an essay to take home and return within two weeks.
In our experience this is the most valuable and meaningful part of the application process for both students and Field.

Step Three: Student Completes an Essay at Home
During our conversation with the student, we will give him or her a list of fun essay topics.  The student should independently complete one and return it to us within two weeks of the school visit.

Step Four: Submit Additional Materials

After the visit and no later than February 1, 2011 please send us the following:
  • Two teacher recommendations, one from either English or social sciences and one from either math or science
  • Our parent questionnaire
  • School transcripts for at least the previous two years
  • Reports from any one of the Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT), the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE), or a WISC evaluation as administered by a licensed educational psychologist in the calendar year prior to application.  (Note: The WISC provides a more comprehensive view of a student's abilities and learning styles.)
  • Any and all other relevant educational testing or other information that will help to know your child as a student and person.  Please, please do not withhold any relevant testing or information, as we seek to get as complete an understanding of applicants as possible so we can determine whether we believe they can be successful at The Field School.
Step Five: Timely Submission of the Financial Aid Application (if relevant)
Families who will be requesting tuition aid must submit the appropriate information to School and Student Services (SSS) by January 15th.  This application can be made on-line at www.nais.org. Also, your 2009 IRS 1040 and W2 must be submitted directly to our office no later than February 15th.
GET STARTED HERE
To begin the process, first give us a call to talk about the school and to book one of our small morning tours for parents and older students.  This will allow you to learn what makes our school unique and—perhaps—the right place for your student.

To sign up for a tour or to get in touch with us generally, please contact Michele Wiles (202 295 295-5839 or MicheleW@fieldschool.org).

If you are ready, at this point, to fill out the on-line application form (assuming you have already visited the school and know that you want to apply, you do so now by clicking HERE.
