| Field's varied and inclusive activities program runs between October and May during the after-lunch period called "SHAM". During this time, Tuesdays through Fridays, students may choose among a variety of activities — mostly student-initiated and faculty supervised — that meet for one period each week.
By running these activities during the school day rather than after-school, they do not conflict with our sports program. This is crucial — students are not forced to choose between playing in the jazz ensemble and playing basketball or between acting in the student-directed plays and running track.
The list of activities, to the right, is rich and fun!
In the alternative, many students may devote their after-lunch "SHAM" time to monitored study halls or to an Honors Seminar.

   | The Field School Jazz Ensemble Will Layman, Tim Lyons, Gil Gallagher, Neil Basu
The Field School Jazz Ensemble, founded by teachers Will Layman and Chris Osmond in 1994, is the longest-running activity at Field. Student musicians and singers must audition for the group in September. The band rehearses during two SHAM periods each week and performs frequently through the year -- in free shows in the living room, at the Holiday Open House and at Studio Day, and in a complete concert in the theater each April. The band learns to practice and perform a wide variety of American music on relatively little rehearsal — with an emphasis on soul and improvisation.
