Field's Next Head of School: Lori Strauss

Dear Field Community:

I am delighted to announce the appointment of Lori Strauss as Field’s next Head of School beginning in July 2020. Lori was unanimously chosen as Field's third Head of School, following the unanimous recommendation of the Head Search Committee. Lori currently serves as the Associate Head of School (and next year will serve as Acting Head) at Wildwood School, a K-12 school of 740 students in Los Angeles. We hope you will join us in welcoming Lori to the Field community!

We look forward to introducing Lori further and beginning to welcome her into our community in the coming months. We are very fortunate to have Anne Foley ’96 continuing to serve as our Interim Head of School for the 2019-2020 school year, which affords us ample time for a smooth transition while continuing to move Field forward.

The search process for a new Head of School has been a deliberate and thoughtful journey that included the entire community. The search began in October 2018 with the hiring of search consultants Tony Featherston and Clay Stites of RG175. It was directed by a Head Search Committee made up of 17 members of our community, including alumni, teachers, staff, parents, and alumni parents. Tony and Clay received a wealth of resumes for the position, which they narrowed down to 19 compelling candidates. The Search Committee, after extensive work and deliberations, dedicated countless hours reviewing the candidates and chose nine semi-finalists to interview. Three final candidates were selected to come to meet the Field community. After this exhaustive process, Lori emerged as the right fit to continue The Field School’s mission and core values and to lead Field into the future to realize its great potential.

Lori’s references were overwhelmingly enthusiastic about her and her qualifications, saying:

"She is a super star in every way in school leadership. She is also hilarious.”

[She is] “an amazing leader who is incredibly smart, innovative, empathetic, creative, student focused, and a brilliant educator.”

“There is nobody in the entire world of independent schools that I would hire before her.”

Likewise, members of our community who met Lori during the search process had high praise for her:

"Lori is smart, articulate, composed, energetic, authentic, inspiring, knowledgeable, passionate about education, deeply invested in educating children - I have nothing negative to say."

"Lori would be an exemplary head of school and leader for Field. She would lead Field into an exciting future that would respect what is wonderful and unique to Field while challenging Field to confront the challenges of education and the world that face our children. She possesses all the right qualities to lead Field in its next chapter…”

“Listening to her was honestly inspiring. I was so impressed, and I would feel excited to have her lead Field and be our boss."

“Wow!”

The process for finding our new Head has involved the entire community and we want to thank all of you for your thoughtful participation, effort, and input. I have to give special thanks to the Head Search Committee, led by Ryan Katz and assisted by Julia Gaylord, who spent countless hours tirelessly evaluating the candidates, reviewing the comments of the community, and finding such a stellar candidate who so strongly matches our needs and philosophy. We truly value and appreciate everyone’s contributions. Thank you!

Lori and her family are looking forward to joining the Field community. She wanted to share a few words with us:

“I was struck by how alive the school’s mission was in everyday program and decision making. Too often, schools can succumb to the traditional, expected, and easy routes forward. Field faculty and staff were collaborative and innovative by nature, embracing the emerging conversation on the future of education and how to continue to serve all students well in an increasingly global and interconnected world. Parents and students expressed unwavering commitment to the culture and community that has been a transformational experience for so many. Field has so much to be proud of and I am thrilled by the opportunity to join you.”

We have much to celebrate, much to be thankful for, and much to look forward to.

Aude Sapere,

Will Pecau
Chair, Board of Trustees
The Field School
