As we begin a year-long celebration of Field at 50, we hope you'll join us as we acknowledge the significance of our past and look forward to the future.
At Field, we are celebrating 50 years forward. Embedded in honoring our history is looking forward to our shared future. Forward thinking has been a central tenet of the Field educational environment from the very beginning. Founded in 1972 by Elizabeth Ely as a place where a classic curriculum encompassing organized "fields” of knowledge could be taught in a small environment that stressed dialogue, analytic thinking, and larger lessons on how young people could grow to become empathetic, responsible, self-knowing adults. That spirit of curiosity, intellectual engagement, and inclusivity still amplify these hallways.
Every year of the last 50, in the final weeks of summer, faculty have gathered to reflect on and revise curriculum, share best practices, and hone their teaching skills. We continue to stand by this tradition as we commit to meeting the needs of our society, community, and individual students in the 2022-2023 school year. With faculty attending more than a dozen professional development conferences and workshops this summer, and three weeks of in-house teacher development, we are energized to welcome our students.
Meeting the moment meant something different in 1972. All in the Family and Sanford and Son were the most watched TV shows of 1972. Today, Stranger Things and Better Call Saul spin a different cultural narrative. In 1972, Title IX was signed into law, Watergate was set into motion, and Intel introduced the 8008 processor. Today, with the passage of a law that includes the most significant investment in climate action in our history, a summer of the January 6th Committee hearings, and the development of the metaverse, the pace of change and the associated feelings can be overwhelming. We live in an ever-changing, increasingly ambiguous, and dynamic world. At Field we continue to respond by adapting our classrooms and teaching to ensure our students are prepared to be active citizens and good neighbors.
As a school, our evolution was set into motion from our founding. Field has created student engagement opportunities through meaningful and relevant curricula for five decades. Field at 50 is a school that demands and nurtures. We take care of each other and support individual and community growth. We meet the moment with creativity, resilience, and innovation. We hope you will join us in this year-long celebration honoring our past and looking forward to our future.
