Athletics Thought Leadership

Michael Schuler, Athletic Director

Since becoming Athletic Director in June, I have been thoroughly impressed by the Field community and its commitment to and enthusiasm for athletics. Our coaches and student-athletes began the school year with early-morning preseason training sessions weeks before the official first day of school. Teams came together to build skills and persevere through challenging exercises and circumstances. Collectively, they have faced the heat, thunderstorms, and logistical challenges, supporting one another every step of the way.

In school athletics, development and competition are sometimes treated as opposing priorities. I don’t believe we have to choose between growth and winning. At Field, meaningful competition gives students a reason to prepare, respond to feedback, take risks, and improve. Growth makes competition more purposeful. We want athletes who care about the outcome and who understand that how they prepare, respond, and contribute matters.

Field student-athletes desire success on the field, but they also understand that athletics can strengthen the broader school community. With the season officially underway, I have seen that commitment translate into competitive, thoughtful sportsmanship and the habits we hope students carry beyond Field.

Our Middle School girls soccer team debuted their season with a strong victory. The Varsity Girls Soccer team dominated a match and won after falling to a tough opponent the day before. The Varsity Volleyball team dropped an early set in a match and then responded to take the next set amid the roar of the Field community in O’Brien Gymnasium. The JV Boys Soccer team gutted out a close victory under the lights.

Responding to setbacks, whether overcoming a tough loss, an early deficit, or a challenging opponent, demonstrates the grit, tenacity, and competitive drive we want our student-athletes to develop. The pride of being a Falcon resonated across Gallagher Field as teams cheered enthusiastically for teammates and peers, regardless of grade. We are all Falcons here at Field, whether we participate as spectators or as part of a team. When classmates, families, and supporters show up and cheer, they contribute to the energy and sense of belonging that help our teams thrive.

I look forward to seeing that Falcon pride grow throughout the year, on the field, in the gym, and in the stands. Stock up on your spirit wear during Homecoming on October 2 and join us in showing your Falcon pride!
