Summer Reading

THE FIELD SCHOOL ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

Summer reading gives students a chance to read with fresh eyes and at their own pace—and we think they'll really like these titles! Students should expect to discuss these texts at the beginning of the fall semester, so we encourage them to prepare for active discussion by keeping a reading journal or annotating significant passages as they read. We welcome families to read along, too, so as to join our proud community of readers!

2018 ENGLISH SUMMER READING LIST

THE FIELD SCHOOL HISTORY DEPARTMENT

The purpose of summer reading is twofold: to give students the opportunity to read books over the summer that they might enjoy, and to give them a common understanding of some element of the history they will be studying next school year. Books were selected with these two goals in mind. How individual teachers and courses make use of the summer reading may vary, but each student should be prepared to make use of the summer reading at the start of the school year. Students are strongly encouraged to purchase a copy of the book so that they might take notes in it and highlight passages, etc. Students should carefully review the requirements for the grade they will be entering in the fall. At some grade levels, the requirements include following reading guides, note-taking, or film-viewing.
