REASONABLE START TIMES
The middle school begins at 8:00 a.m. with their studio class, and the upper school begins at 8:50 a.m.
THREE DAYS OF SIX ACADEMIC PERIODS
On Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays, students attend six 40-minute academic classes, four before lunch and two in the afternoon. Classes consistently begin at the same time each day and do not rotate in any way.
TWO DAYS OF THREE "BLOCK PERIODS"
On most Wednesdays and Thursdays, students attend only three academic classes, each 85 minutes long. The block periods allow classes to work on labs, simulations, and longer assessments—and they also facilitate field trips that do not require students to miss other classes.
A 15-MINUTE MID-MORNING BREAK
At 10:15 each morning, students get a break to visit with a teacher, hang out, grab a snack or relax. No academic class begins more than an hour removed from a rest.
ONE CONSISTENT LUNCH PERIOD
All students and teachers eat lunch together at the same time each day.
A POST-LUNCH ACTIVITY PERIOD
Our "SHAM" (Study halls, Honors, Activities, Meetings) period after lunch allows for monitored study halls, small "honors" classes, activities and regular meetings. This period is home to the student government, the jazz ensemble, our extended "lunch study hall" for students who are behind in homework, and many other activities that make the day more fun, more productive, or both.
Most students begin participation in sports at 3:00 p.m. The activity period and academic-day studio classes ensure that athletics do not conflict with most arts and activity programs.
