Field’s Filmmaking Concentration class in upper school is deep into production on this year’s film Cruising Paradise. This year-long, collaborative project brings together every stage of the filmmaking process, from initial character and plot development to the final cut.
The idea for Cruising Paradise did not begin with a traditional brainstorming session. While students were shooting on location in Georgetown last spring, an unexpected character emerged–and with it, the heart of this story. The film’s narrative took shape organically, with the plot developing from the character.
The production process is intentionally collaborative. Students rotate through roles during pre-production, production, and post-production, ensuring everyone gains experience across disciplines. Students serve as director, assistant director, cinematographer, script supervisor, production coordinator, set designer, prop master, gaffer, and key grip. They also have the opportunity to gain experience using various pieces of production equipment, including steadicams and snorricams.
The collaborative nature of this project extends beyond the students in the Filmmaking Concentration class. Promotion for Cruising Paradise will be designed by Scatter Brand, the Print Concentration class’ student-led design agency.
While specific details of the story remain under wraps, the film explores themes of presence and attention–finding beauty in ordinary moments and learning to stay grounded in the present.
Cruising Paradise will premiere this spring at The Field School Film Festival.
