Middle School History

Each year, Field’s 7th grade students have an opportunity to experience the Washington National Cathedral as part of their World Religions class, during their unit on the history of Christianity. This visit has become a central tenet of the curriculum, bringing classroom learning to life in one of D.C.’s most iconic landmarks.

Preparation and Study

Before visiting the Cathedral, students spend time in the classroom exploring its rich history and significance. They learned about the structure, symbolism, and historical importance of the Cathedral, examining its role not only in D.C., but in a global context. This preparation helped students develop a deeper understanding of Gothic architecture, religious symbolism, and the cultural impact of sacred spaces.

The Experience

Walking through the iconic global arches, examining the gorgeous stained glass windows, and observing centuries-old craftsmanship–students witnessed the physical manifestation of the concepts they have been studying in class. This immersive experience allows them to see how architectural elements work together to create meaning and how historical influences shape the design of sacred buildings.

The Cathedral Design Project

Following their visit, students channeled their observations and learning into an original design project. Using digital design tools, each student created their own interpretation of a cathedral.

Reflection

An essential component of this project was the written reflection. This helps them think about what they created, its historical significance, and the connections they made during the visit to the Cathedral. Students demonstrated their understanding of how architecture can tell stories, express values, and create spaces that inspire and unite communities.
