The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are the nation's longest-running educational initiative supporting student achievement in the visual and literary arts. The program has an impressive legacy of being the first to acknowledge creative talent and is a large source of scholarships for creative teens. Notable alumni of the awards (who were themselves honored in middle school or high school) include director Ken Burns, artist Andy Warhol, artist Charles White, author Truman Capote, author Sylvia Plath, actor/director Robert Redford, artist Kay WalkingStick, sculptor Luis Jiménez, and National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman. Jurors look for works that exemplify originality, skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. Regional Gold Key recipients are automatically considered for national awards.
